Q: At what point can gum disease be reversed? What are the signs of improvement? I recently went to the dentist and the technician informed me I had a gum depth of 5 in three or four places and that it was irreversible gum disease. They made it sound like my teeth were falling out so I’ve tried to research periodontitis and have gotten mixed reviews. Some sites say that a 5 can be reversed; others make my situation sound hopeless. I have since been flossing daily and using a Waterpik, overall I think my mouth has improved, but a few teeth still bleed when I floss, giving me that hopeless feeling again. Any realistic expectations, information, and guidance are appreciated, thanks!
A: My advice is to have a complete evaluation with a quality set of digital x rays by an experienced Laser Periodontist (specialist). There are no set rules regarding pocket depth. Each patient is different. If you have bone loss (which can be determined after your evaluation) there are a number of options for treatment. Having the option of the FDA cleared LANAP procedure would be a great if you are a candidate.
